Frequently Asked Questions
How does HeyCounsel make money?
We charge lawyers a monthly subscription to be part of the platform. The first few months are entirely free.
I'm currently working as an in-house lawyer; will my employer find out about this?
When you sign up for HeyCounsel, you have the option to keep your profile information anonymous (see Remaining Anonymous). However, we strongly suggest that you obtain approval from your current employer before moving forward with any advisory engagement outside of your current employment. Don’t worry, so long as there are no conflicts, this should be a fairly uncontroversial conversation. We are happy to help you frame this conversation when it comes time to get approval.
I'm currently in-house, what about conflicts of interest with my employer?

Conflicts considerations for In-house LawyersDo you need to obtain your own malpractice insurance?
Depending on your state bar rules, you might not need to obtain your own insurance... but we ask that you disclose whether or not you have insurance on your profile. While some clients require the attorneys they engage to carry insurance, others do not. Accordingly, carrying insurance is not a prerequisite to joining HeyCounsel. That said, we do ask you to accurately report your current coverage status, and to keep the information you provide current.
Does HeyCounsel carry any malpractice insurance on behalf of the attorneys in its network?
We do not carry insurance for any attorneys on our marketplace. HeyCounsel is neither a law firm nor "lawyer referral service" and provides no legal services. No attorney-client relationship is ever created between clients and HeyCounsel; all relationships occur directly between clients and the attorneys they engage.
