Invoicing & Payments

How to pay invoices on the platform

Before attorneys can send invoices, they are required to set up their Stripe account.

If your engagement does not include a cash component, you will not be required to set up an account through stripe.

Logistical matters

Monthly Billing. Lawyers on the platform are expected to bill on a monthly basis. Billing periods in our Platform Engagement Agreement start at the beginning of the month and end after the last day of the month.

Timing. According to our standard Platform Engagement Agreement. Lawyers have 10 days to submit an invoice to the client, and the client has 10 days to make a payment. Both sides are free to agree to different timing; however, we encourage you to get any changes documented and uploaded to the Documents tab.

Email reminders. HeyCounsel will send reminders to ensure you submit your invoices on time.

Paying your bill

Invoicing is done through the Payments tab on the Engagements Page.

View and Download: To view an invoice, click on the three dots to the right of the invoice and click "view". To download, you may click Download PDF once you view the invoice.

Paying an invoice: To pay an invoice, click "Pay Now". From there, you'll see the invoice builder.

Lawyers can add many types of fees when adding line-items:

  • Hourly: Billing based on hours worked and the hourly rate.

  • Flat Fee: Project based billing with a negotiated flat fee.

  • Monthly Fee: A monthly fee for a pre-determined and negotiated commitment.

  • Pass-thru: Fees that should NOT be subject to the HeyCounsel Platform Fee, because they are third party charges that should be "passed through" to the client. E.g. filing fees, court fees, purchase of forms, etc.

Platform Fee. The Platform Fee will be displayed as a separate line item and calculated based on your invoiced amounts.
